The shirt is doing all of it: blue striped cotton, cut regular, worn open and untucked with the sleeves pushed back once. Under it a white ribbed tank, close to the body, the only plain thing on him. He is leaning on a lamppost on one of the wide Eixample pavements, Barcelona in full mid-morning glare, waiting on someone who is late. The trousers are grey wool, double pleated, wide and straight and long enough to stack over blue plimsolls. The dark brown sunglasses are in his hand because he keeps forgetting to put them on.

It holds because one pattern is doing the work and everything under it stands back: stripes at the collar where the eye already goes, white through the middle, grey from the waist down, blue again at the floor. The wool is the step out of line, smooth and matte against all that cotton and rubber, and it is what keeps an open shirt from reading as holiday. Swap the tank for a white tee and it goes to lunch. Button the shirt and the trousers take over. Put brown loafers on it and the morning turns into an afternoon.
