Black Leather Overshirt, White T-Shirt, Cuffed Wide-Leg Jeans, Black Penny Loafers

Half past nine on a Saturday, a quiet street off the top of the park, the hedges still wet from the night and the dog setting the pace. The jacket is black leather cut like a shirt, collar out, chest pockets flapped, the silver snaps left undone the whole way down. Under it a white tee ending just past the waist. A black leather belt shows in the gap. The jeans are blue and heavily whiskered, faded pale across the thigh and the knee, wide and turned up twice at the hem over black penny loafers gone soft with wear.

The leather is old and the denim is older and the white tee is the only clean thing on him, which is what stops the whole thing reading as costume. Black at the shoulders, white through the middle, blue to the ankle, black again at the waist and at the floor. The turn-ups are the part worth copying: a wide leg shortened enough to show the whole shoe looks chosen, and one that swallows the shoe looks borrowed. Swap the loafers for white sneakers and it moves a decade. Swap the tee for a grey sweatshirt and it takes a colder morning. The snaps stay undone in all of them.
