Seven-something in Trastevere, the stone still warm. He has taken the table nobody wants, the one half in the street, and ordered a coffee he is not going to finish. The shirt is a navy striped poplin worn open, sleeves pushed back once, over a white tank that has done more work than anything else he owns. Black pleated trousers break clean over penny loafers, no socks, and a thin leather belt is the only thing on him that looks chosen.

Nothing here is trying, which is the trick of the open-shirt-over-tank outfit. The shirt does the talking and the tank keeps it honest. The pleats give the trousers somewhere to sit, and the loafers say he might stay a while. Swap the tank for a T-shirt and it goes to lunch. Button the shirt and it goes to dinner. Leave it as it is and it goes nowhere in particular, which is the point.
