Six in the evening in Brera, the stone still holding the day's heat, and he has come down the hotel steps with an hour to kill before anyone expects him. The cardigan is navy cashmere and cotton brushed soft, buttoned to the chest, the shoulders sitting wide. A white tee shows at the collar and again at the hem. The trousers are ecru, pleated, wide enough to move on their own, and they break twice over square-toed black boots. The sunglasses went on in the lobby and have stayed on.

Two colours, and the darker one sits up top where the eye goes: navy at the shoulders, ecru from the waist down, black at the floor to close it. Everything below the waist is doing the moving and everything above it stays still, which is what keeps a leg that wide from going shapeless. Swap the tee for a fine navy knit and it goes to dinner. Swap the boots for brown loafers and it loses its edge, which some evenings is the right call. Leave the sunglasses on.
