Blue Merino Sweater, Light Blue Oxford Shirt, Faded Straight-Leg Jeans, Brown Leather Boots

He is walking, and he has been walking a while. Grey afternoon in the Quadrilatero, flat light, no shadows, shutters half down along a street narrow enough to take in one line. The sweater is a blue merino, fine gauge, sleeves pushed to the forearm, the shoulders dropped and sitting easy. Under it a light blue Oxford, collar out flat over the crew neck, cuffs turned back at the wrist. A slim brown belt shows where the shirt hem parts. The jeans are faded through the thigh, straight the whole way down, and they break once over brown leather boots on a heavy sole.

Blue on blue on blue, three depths of it, which is the whole trick: merino at the shoulders, a paler cotton at the collar, denim gone almost white at the thigh. Brown at the waist and again at the floor closes it off. The boots are the only heavy thing he has on, and without them all that soft blue would float. Swap the Oxford for a white tee and it stops looking considered. Swap the boots for white sneakers and the blue runs to the floor uninterrupted, which is a lighter day. Push the sleeves back whatever you do, because the cuffs are half the point.
